Canton – Robert Lee Brown, age 81, died Saturday, July 12, 2008, at his residence. A native of Fairfield, CA, he had resided in Haywood County for almost 40 years. He was the son of the late William Earl and Hannah Elizabeth Robinson Brown and was preceded in death by his fist wife, Russie; and a son, Junior. Robert was a member of the 82nd Airborne as paratrooper and a supply officer with the U.S. Army having served in World War II and the Korean and Vietnam wars for 20 years. He retired from the U.S. Post Office with 27 years of service and was known as "Charlie Brown." Robert was very active and proud to be a volunteer at Oak Grove Baptist Church and was a member of Bethel Baptist Church. He enjoyed gardening and was a hard worker throughout his lifetime always working two or three jobs. Surviving are his wife of 10 years, Betty Jean Taylor Brown; two sons, Jess Brown of Norfolk, VA, and Duke Brown and his wife, Karen, of Bradford, PA; two stepsons, Alan Burnette, and his wife, Cynthia, and Randy Burnette, all of Canton; two daughters, Johnnie Bennett and her husband, Ross, of Candler; and Mary Shuler and her husband, Terry, of Littlerock, AK; three sisters, Jessie Wooten and her husband, the late Glen, Earline Chance and Alice Psutsui and her husband, Fred; two brothers, William Brown and his wife, Donna, and Edward Brown and his wife, Loretta, all residing out West; and 13 grandchildren. Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 15, 2008, in the chapel of Wells Funeral Home of Canton with the Reverend Dr. Roy Kilby and the Reverend Bruce Cayton officiating. Burial will follow in Crawford-Ray Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
