Waynesville, Robert Lee Smith, Sr., age 79, passed away on Wednesday, May 19, 2010 at his residence. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Leonard Carroll and Lucy Jane Burnett Smith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Aubry and Edwin Smith and two sisters, Alene Turner and Dorothy Ford. He was employed by Dayco Incorporated and retired after 22 years service. Robert was an avid fisherman, enjoyed hunting, and was a jack-of-all-trades. While on the road, he never passed a person who needed a helping hand and was a loyal friend to all. He was a delegate to the National Convention in 1976. Robert was dedicated to his family and especially loved his grandchildren. He attended Rocky Branch Freewill Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Altha Plemmons Smith; four sons, Robert Lee Smith, Jr. and his wife, Jane, of Waynesville, Harold Dean Smith and his wife, Ellen, of Sylva, Tom Smith and his wife, Martha, of Leicester, and Charles Phillip Smith and his wife, Robin, of Crystal Beach, NC; two daughters, Revonda Stamey of Waynesville and Kathy Whent and her husband, Jerry, of Canton; two sisters, Patsy Conard and her husband, Bob, and Mary Cagle and her husband, Doyle, all of Waynesville; three brothers, Joe Smith and his wife, Wilma, of Clyde, Ben Smith and his wife, Linda, of Arden and John Smith and his wife, Betty, of Lake Junaluska; 12 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; and 1 great-great grandchild. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 23, 2010 in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Charlie Creasman officiating. Burial will follow at Rocky Branch Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home and other times, at the residence.
