Robert Eugene Massie

Robert Eugene Massie passed away Sunday February 25, 2024.  He was born to Thomas Guy and Hettie Mock Massie on March 25,1933 in Haywood County. Proceeded in death by parents and sister Lois M. McEdwards, and survived by his wife Sarah Shaw Massie, son David Reagan Massie (Kim), daughter Laura Massie Howell (Dean), grandsons Lucas Dean Howell (Kalei) and Ethan Robert Howell (Brittney), and great granddaughter Emma Mason Howell and great grandson Townes Lucas Howell.

 

Bob became an Eagle Boy Scout in his teen years and later served as Scout Master.  He graduated from UNC, Chapel Hill in 1955 with a BS Degree in Business and was commissioned as Second Lieutenant in the US Air Force and called to active duty in 1956. Bob met his wife Sarah Shaw while in the service and they were married in 1957.

 

Bob was employed by Peebles-Kimbrell Dept store and Champion paper company upon returning to Waynesville. He then worked in banking from 1962 until he retired in 1996, first for First State Bank and then as a Vice President at Northwestern Bank and First Citizens Bank.

 

He was active in church, civic, and community affairs serving on numerous boards of directors and committees including Waynesville Housing Authority, Haywood County Hospital Foundation, Salvation Army, Downtown Waynesville Association, First United Methodist Church, Waynesville Lions Club, Haywood County Fairgrounds, and Haywood Rod and Gun Club.

 

Bob was a life-long member of First United Methodist Church, serving on the Administrative Board, active in the Pumpkin Patch, Pancake Day and in renovation of the church parsonage.

 

Bob's joys in life were spending time at the family cabin at Lake Glenville, trout fishing, hunting, and fishing at the Rod and Gun Club and all things firewood.

 

Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, February 29, 2024, at the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home.  A celebration for family and friends will follow at the Wells Events and Reception Center.

 

In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bob’s name to First United Methodist Church or Longs Chapel Firewood Ministry (PO Box 611, Waynesville).

 

The care of Mr. Massie has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville
