Clyde, Mr. Robert Taylor Medford, 86, of Clyde passed away on Thursday, January 15, 2015 at Haywood Hospital after a period of declining health. He was the son of Wayne William and Fannie Chambers Medford. In addition to his parents, Mr. Medford was preceded in death by two sons, William Taylor Medford and Robert Taylor Medford, Jr.; a brother, Charles Medford; and three sisters, Ethel M. Stuart, Kathleen M. Muse and Janet M. Debruycker. Mr. Medford retired from Dayco after 31 years and was an active member of Woodland Baptist Church until his illness and was very instrumental (along with Lawrence Downs) in building the former sanctuary of the church. He served in the Korean Conflict and was a member of the American Legion Military Honor Guard. He enjoyed spending time with his granddaughters and great- grandchildren, farming, raising cattle, watching Carolina basketball and Atlanta Braves baseball. Robert was a lifelong democrat, never missing the opportunity to vote on any election day, and he read the newspaper from beginning to ending every day. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Gwen Guess Medford; three sons, Dean Medford (Peggy) of Waynesville, Gene Medford (Tamara) of Clyde and Delbert Medford (Kendra) of Clyde; five granddaughters, Stefanie M. Cash (Sean) of Waynesville, Heidi Medford of Aiken, SC, Haley Medford, Rachel Medford and Dominique Medford of Clyde; one step- granddaughter, Gina Phillips (Keith) of Asheville; two great grandchildren, Andrew and Leah Gilland of Waynesville; two step-great grandchildren, Greyson and Iva Phillips of Asheville; two brothers, Harold (Wilda) Medford and George Medford of Clyde; two sisters, Nancy Wells of Canton and Beulah Zumwalt of Deer Park, TX; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 17 at Woodland Baptist Church with Reverend Alan Davis and Reverend David Williams officiating. Burial will follow at Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery with military honors. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:30 p.m. prior to services at the church.
