Canton-Robert P. Trantham, age 83, died Wednesday, January 26, 2005 at his residence. He was a native and lifelong resident of Haywood County and was a son of the late Lawson Alexander and Gennie Surrett Trantham. He was also preceded in death by an infant son, Terry Trantham, one sister and five brothers. Mr. Trantham was a retired farmer and was a member of James Chapel Baptist Church and was a United States Army veteran serving in World War II. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Selma Jane McCracken Trantham, two daughters Wilma Coultes and Sherry Clay, both of Ft. Worth, TX, two sisters Elizabeth Carson of Canton and Betty Trull of Asheville, two brothers Paul Trantham and Howard Trantham both of Waynesville, 4 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 29, 2005 at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services. Reverend Mark Caldwell and Reverend Jimmy Trantham will officiate. Burial will follow at Upper Crabtree Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by the VFW Post #5202 and the American Legion. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the residence.
