Robert Steffero, Sr.

Robert Francis Steffero, Sr., 72, passed away on Friday, May 29, 2009, after a 6 month battle with cancer. He was born in Derby, CT and spent many years in Connecticut before moving to Myrtle Beach, SC, Atlanta, GA and finally Canton, NC. He served in the US Navy and was a plankholder on the USS Forrestal. He was a steam engineer and consultant, owning his own business for a number of years. He was a member of Rotary and was active in growing the Little League program in Seymour, CT and started a girls' softball league. He was a member of Long's Chapel United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Rebecca Owen, two sons, Robert Steffero, Jr. of Derby, CT; and Trey Crim of S. Weymouth, MA; and daughter, Donna Steffero of Winder, GA. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, June 1, 2009, at Long's Chapel United Methodist Church with the Reverend Dr. Charles W. "Chuck" Wilson, II, the Reverend Alan Mears, and Sonny Lescalleet officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:30 until 3:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church. Wells Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Canton is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Haywood Regional Medical Center Hospice, 560 LeRoy George Dr, Clyde, NC 28721, Long's Chapel United Methodist Church, 133 Old Clyde Rd, Waynesville, NC 28785, or The American Cancer Society, 90 Stiles Road, Canton, NC 28716.
