Robert White

January 10, 1925 — June 6, 2004

Lake Junaluska, NC-Robert W. White, age 79, of Stuart Circle, died Sunday, June 6, 2004 at his residence. A native of Newberry, SC. he was the son of the late Julian W. and Eva Mae Walling White. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Julian W. White, Jr. of Greenwood, SC and Zed L. White of Sullivans Island, SC. He attended primary and secondary schools in Columbia and Greenwood, SC. He attended The Citadel in Charleston, SC and was graduated from Clemson College with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He served in the US Army Corps of Engineers in Europe during World War II. After college he worked for Lockhart (SC) Power Company in engineering and supervisory positions. In 1955, he joined General Electric Company Outdoor Lighting Department at Hendersonville, NC as a manufacturing engineer. He later transferred to GE's Appliance Motor Department at DeKalb, IL, where he worked until his retirement in 1988. He was a registered professional engineer, and was awarded six patents related to his service with GE. He was a precinct committeeman in DeKalb for 28 years. He served in Lions Clubs in DeKalb and Lake Junaluska. He was also a lifelong member of the Methodist Church, most recently of First United Methodist Church in Waynesville, NC, which he served in many capacities. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Nora (White) White; four sons, Ronald C. White of Chicago, IL, Robert L. "Larry" White and his wife, Nancy, of N. Augusta, SC, David B. White of Pendleton, SC, and W. Eric White of Simpsonville, SC; and five grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at the First United Methodist Church in Waynesville, NC at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 10, 2004. The family will receive friends following the service. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, June 11, 2004 at Oakbrook Memorial Park, Greenwood, SC. Memorials may be given to Habitat for Humanity, 122 S. Main Street, Waynesville, NC 28786, Alzheimer's Association, Western Carolina Chapter, 31 College Place, Suite D320, Asheville, NC 28801-2644, or Haywood Regional Medical Center Hospice, 560 Leroy George Drive, Clyde, NC 28721.
