Dellwood, Roberta Elizabeth Moody Haynes, age 88, passed away on Saturday, February 9, 2014 at Mission Hospital after suffering a fall. A native of Haywood County, she was the eldest daughter of the late Hilliard and Rosa Lee Moody. She spent 54 happy years married to Charles Richard Haynes, who passed away in 2003 and was also preceded in death by a son, David Lee Haynes, and her sisters, Jacqueline Haynes and Kathleen Dover. Together, she and Charles farmed chickens, co-owned and operated a small grocery store, a restaurant, and a daycare and happily retired into volunteering for as long as they were able. Bertie loved her mountains and enjoyed her later years close to home and being in the constant company of her little dog, "Charlie". She is survived by her daughter, Charleen Haynes Ballard, of Waynesville; three grandchildren, Beth Martin of Blacksburg, South Carolina, David Haynes of Carrollton, Georgia, and Julie Burris of Cary, North Carolina; four great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. A memorial service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 15, 2014 in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Jeremiah Rich officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. With loving hearts, we say "thank you so much" to all our family and friends who have aided Bertie. The helpers of Haywood County Meals-On-Wheels have been a daily part of Bertie's life. Please direct memorial gifts to them at 157 Paragon Parkway, Suite 300, Clyde, NC 28721 or to the Haywood County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 931, Waynesville, NC 28786.
