Waynesville-Roena "Doe" Mae Smith, age 74, of Edwards Street died Friday, August 24, 2007 at her home. She was a native of Haywood County and was the daughter of the late Robert and Sarah Lanning Mathis. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Jack Smith, who died in 1984; a daughter, Jackie Sue Smith, a brother, Clarence Mathis and two sisters, Lula Belle Swanger and Edna Ledford. She was employed at Grandview Lodge as a housekeeper for 30 years and was a member of Allens Creek Baptist Church. Doe volunteered at the Waynesville Nutrition Center and loved gardening, her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and her pets. She is survived by three daughters, Brenda Ingle of Candler, Cathy Merritt of Waynesville and Lynn Frazier of Canton; two sisters, Ruby Parker of Gastonia and Lucy Gaddis of Hickory; one brother, Ralph Mathis of Waynesville; three grandsons and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, August 26, 2007 in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Eddie Deitz officiating. Burial will follow at Greenhill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 3:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. Serving as pallbearers will be Jeff and Greg Ingle, David Shook, Kent Frazier, Kenneth Smith, Jr. and Scott Smith.
