Waynesville, Roger Boyd Medford, passed away Saturday, January 9, 2016 at his residence. Boyd was born in Haywood County on February 20, 1928, to the late Roger Manson Medford and Ester Boyd Medford. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his youngest son, John Manson Medford and son-in-law, Keith Wyatt. Boyd was a United States Navy Veteran who served in World War II. He retired from Dayco Industries. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Waynesville. Boyd was an avid gardener, trout fisherman, horse rider, and camper who spent many days with family and friends in the Cataloochee Valley of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Also, annually in August and September, he and friends would travel to western Montana to fish Rock Creek and other streams in the Bitterroot Mountains area and the Dillon area. Boyd also took special pride in his large vegetable garden, especially his corn field beans and tomatoes. In addition, he loved spending time with his family, especially his four children, nine grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. He was affectionately known as "Ol' Man." He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Nancy Jones Medford; son Bo Medford and wife Angie; daughters, Kathy Wyatt, Jane Nicholson and husband Nick; daughter-in-law Kathryn Medford; brother John Hugh Medford; nine grandchildren, Caroline Parrish (Mike), Julie Riva (Tony), Blake Nicholson (Jek), Zack Nicholson (Brookely), Alex Medford, Nancy Medford, John Tanner Medford, Lucy Medford, and Sara Medford; three great-grandchildren, Will Riva, Remi Nicholson, and Paxton Nicholson. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 12, 2016 at First United Methodist Church of Waynesville with Reverend Sanford L. Giles, Jr. officiating. Friends are invited to join the family in a Celebration of Boyd's Life at the Wells Events & Reception Center following the service.
