Ronald Koonts

Waynesville, Ronald A. Koonts, age 76, passed away on Wednesday, May 13, 2015 at Haywood Lodge. A native of High Point, North Carolina, he was the son of the late Archie Alva and Helen Snider Koonts. Ronald received the Moorehead Scholarship to the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and later earned a Bachelor of Divinity degree and Master of Theology degree from Duke University. He received his Doctorate of Ministry degree from Princeton Theological Seminary. Ronald was ordained an elder in the WNC Conference of the United Methodist Church and served from 1965–1996. In addition to his ministerial duties, he was involved in several Rotary Clubs throughout Western Carolina. Ronald was an avid fan of the Tarheels and also enjoyed tennis and golf. Ronald is survived by a daughter, Kathy Koonts and her husband, Andy Vizor, of Horsham, England; a son, Chris Koonts, and his wife, Karen Williams, of Charlotte; former spouse, Pat Koonts, of Waynesville; three sisters, Carolyn Wagnon and husband, Leon, of Florence, South Carolina, Rebecca Rouse and husband, David, of Goldsboro, North Carolina and Sandra Gramley and husband, Bill, of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; and one grandson, Aidan Williams. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, May 18, 2015 at First United Methodist Church of Waynesville with Reverend Sanford L. Giles, Jr. and Reverend David Baxter officiating. The family will receive friends from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 17, 2015 at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville. A committal service will be held at 4:30 p.m. on Monday at Oakwood Cemetery in High Point, North Carolina. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to one's local Methodist church.
