Roy H. "Dugan" DeWeese, age 71, died Monday, November 10, 2008, at Memorial Mission Hospital. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Jesse Hilton and Velda Christopher DeWeese. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Jesse Hilton "Hoot" DeWeese, Jr. He retired in 1998 from Champion International with 39 years of service as a landfill operator. He was a member of Dutch Cove Baptist Church. Dugan was a quiet gentle man, a lover of nature and animals, especially bird dogs. He fed chipmunks daily and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was a good friend to many and a member of the Horn Hill Hunting Club. He is survived by a sister, Jencie Owen of Maggie Valley; two brothers Billy Jack DeWeese of Canton and Bobby Wayne DeWeese and his wife, Teresa, of Cary; a sister-in-law, Janie DeWeese of Canton; two nieces, Vicki Chambers of Canton and Katharine DeWeese of Cary; two nephews, Derek Blankenship of Maggie Valley and Jonathan DeWeese of Wanchese; four great nephews; and two special families, Mike and Carolyn Rudisill and Bill and Frances Cook. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 12, 2008, at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Ed Lowder officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 1:30 until 2:30 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to one's favorite charity.
