Roy S. "Cat" Holland, age 89, of the Bethel Community died Thursday, June 4, 2009, at Haywood Regional Medical Center. A native of Teton County, WY, he was the son of the late Talmadge and Olive Nicholson Holland. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Beatrice Stevens Holland; a great-grandchild; three brothers; and two sisters. He retired from Champion International with 40 years of service as a maintenance supervisor. He was a member of Canton Central United Methodist Church for 60 years. "Cat" loved woodworking and gardening. He always had a joke and a very dry sense of humor. He got his nickname as a small boy when his cat followed him everywhere from the ball field to the hunting grounds. He was a United States Marine veteran serving during World War II in the South Pacific. He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Edna Trimble Holland; three daughters, Rita Mathews and her husband, Charles, Joy Thompson and her friend, Ronnie, and Wanda Stockton all of Canton; a brother, Wilburn "Shorty" Lowe of Ormond Beach, FL; five grandchildren, Mark Mathews, Margie Dowell and her husband, Jason, Mitchell Mathews, Kent Thompson and his wife, Taryn, and Travis Thompson and his wife, Heather; and four great-grandchildren, Kade, Kirstin, and Aven Thompson and Pressley Dowell. Funeral services will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 6, 2009, at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend David Christy officiating. Burial will follow at Crawford/Ray Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 2:30 until 4:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
