Roy Shaw

Maggie Valley, Roy Cleveland Shaw, age 76, of Shaw Drive, passed away on Sunday, June 27, 2010 at Haywood Regional Medical Center from pancreatic cancer. A native of Spokane, Washington, he was the son of the late Dale and Lila Shaw. Roy graduated from Central Valley High School in Spokane, Washington, where he was student body president. He received his Bachelor's Degree from Gonzaga University and also attended the University of Alabama in Huntsville. He was a veteran of the US Marine Corps. Roy was a mechanical engineer, who worked on the intercontinental ballistic missile project and later for NASA. His career with NASA spanned 34 years where he served as Chief of Propellants at Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. He also worked for two years on the Hubble Space Telescope and at the Advanced Astro Physics Facility. He and his wife retired in 1992 to Maggie Valley where they have lived for the past seventeen years. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Maureen Calkins Shaw; two sons, Vance Shaw and his wife, René, of Watauga, Tennessee and Eric Shaw of Portsmouth, Virginia; one sister, Beverly Shaw Gibson of Spokane, Washington; one brother, Richard Shaw, of Gig Harbor, Washington; three grandchildren, Eric Shaw, Jr., and Michaeli and Rachel Shaw; two great grandchildren, Savannah and Ethan Shaw; and special nephew/grandson, Justin Derrick. The family wishes to acknowledge his sister-in-law, Kathleen Peterson, who provided invaluable love, care and assistance during his illness. Private family services will be held.
