Roy Smathers

Waynesville, Roy Oscar Smathers, age 84, passed away on Sunday, October 4, 2015 at Haywood Regional Medical Center. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Perry and Nellie Arrington Smathers and was also preceded in death by his lovely wife, Goldia Bryson Smathers; two brothers, Kenneth and Sam Smathers; and a sister, Bernice Smathers. He was a US Army veteran and later retired from Dayco, Inc., with 35-years of service and was also a life-long member of Pleasant Balsam Baptist Church. Roy is survived by his very caring and devoted companion, Joyce Drinnon; three sister-in-laws, Authorine Smathers of Waynesville, Sharon Hall of Boston, Massachusetts and Barbara Donahoe of Salem, North Carolina; two nieces, Kathy Weatherman and her husband, Jim, of Waynesville and Pat Carswell and her husband, Mike, of Marion; several nieces and nephews; and an abundance of friends. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 10, 2015 in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Greg Cullen and Reverend Ted Reeves officiating. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park with military graveside rites. The family will receive friends from Noon until 2:00 p.m. on Saturday prior to services at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.
