Roy Suttles

March 20, 1923 — July 12, 2004

Waynesville-Roy Ellis Suttles, age 81, died Monday, July 12, 2004 at Canton Christian Convalescent Center. A native and resident of Madison County most of his life, he was the son of the late John and Ollie Reece Suttles. He was born blind and attended school in Raleigh. He was a farmer and enjoyed pickin' a mandolin with Edward Burns and played in numerous churches and at the Battery Park Hotel. He was of the Baptist faith. He is survived by four daughters, Geraldine Rice and her husband, James, and Mary Sue Pressley and her husband, Neil, both of Asheville, Sandra Kay Norton and her husband, Fredrick, of Marshall, and Cathy Robinson of Canton; a sister, June Swanger and her husband, S.T., of Lake Junaluska; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Andy Hagan. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 14, 2004 at Poplar Gap Cemetery with Reverend Jimmy Moore and Reverend Elbert Deason officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 13, 2004 at Wells Funeral Homes and Cremation Services of Waynesville. Memorials may be made to Poplar Gap Cemetery Fund, c/o Lottie Gregory, 1485 Poplar Gap Road, Hot Springs, NC 28743.
