Waynesville, Ruby Donald Daniel, age 89, passed away on Wednesday, May 13, 2009 at Memorial Mission Hospital. Ruby was born in Live Oak, Florida on March 16, 1920, the daughter of the late, Herbert Lee and Nina Jackson Donald and was also preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Hill. She graduated from Ridgewood High School in Ridgewood, New Jersey, received a BS Degree from Georgia State College for Women in 1941, and worked on her Master's Degree at Columbia University in New York. After college, she taught health, physical education, and biology, and coached basketball in Georgia and at Demonstration High School in Boone, NC. She served several years as Camp Counselor at Lake Champlain in Vermont and also served as supervisor and interviewer for several public opinion and survey research organizations, such as Louis Harris, Peter Hart, Opinion Research, Yankelovitch, Skelly and White, and Gallup. She helped organize and was president of the first Haywood County PTA Council and a member of the Waynesville Book Club. She served two terms on the board of trustees at Appalachian State University and was a past chairperson of that board. Ruby was active in the work of the First Presbyterian Church of Waynesville, having served as President of the Women of the Church, Presbyterian Historian, and elected as the first woman in the history of the church to hold the office of Deacon. She served as president of the Waynesville Women's Golf Association, president of the Western Carolina Women's Golf Association, and president of the North Carolina Senior Women's Golf Association. She also served as a member of the Haywood Regional Medical Center Hospital Auxiliary. Ruby was married to the late Dr. Hugh S. Daniel, Jr., who died in 2000. She is survived by three children, Hugh Kent Daniel and his wife, Lyn, of Powder Springs, GA, Pamela Daniel of Andrews, NC, and Wendy Kiser and her husband, Tyree, of Waynesville; five grandchildren, Ramie Doll of Rocky Mount, Kent Williamson of Wilmington, Sydney Dodson of Weaverville, John Kirkpatrick, of Waynesville, and Riley Palmer of Powder Springs, GA; and two great grandchildren, Kara Dodson of Weaverville and Will Doll of Rocky Mount. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 16, 2009 at First Presbyterian Church of Waynesville with Reverend John Lindsey officiating.
