Waynesville, Ruby Queen Mehaffey, age 90, of Sulphur Springs Road, passed away on Monday, March 19, 2012 at the Brian Center. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late Reverend William L. and Willie York Queen. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Dewey Mehaffey, who died in 2006; one sister, Evelyn Queen, and four brothers, Harold, Howard, Edward, and Robert Queen. Ruby loved flower gardening and collecting family photographs and was a member of Sulphur Springs Freewill Baptist Church. She is survived by two daughters, Brenda Gail Mehaffey of Waynesville and Joyce Mehaffey Dyer and her husband, Robert, of Sylva; one sister, Betty Sue Queen, of Waynesville; two grandchildren, Valerie Jamison and her husband, Jeff, of Sylva and T. Sgt, Anthony Dyer, presently serving in the US Air Force; and one great granddaughter, Morgan Cherry. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 23, 2012 at Sulphur Springs Freewill Baptist Church with Reverend Phillip Wyatt and Reverend Jerry Nelson officiating. Burial will follow at Green Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Thursday at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Scotts Creek Baptist Church Music Fund, 97 Steeple Road, Sylva, NC 28779.
