Waynesville, Rubye Bowles Bryson, age 103, of Woodland Drive, passed away on Wednesday, February 4, 2015 at her residence. A native of Statesville, Rubye had resided in Haywood County since 1941. She was the daughter of the late Watt E. and Ann Hines Bowles and was preceded in death by her husband, James Howard Bryson, who died in 1993; sisters, Garnette Bowles and Helen Renegar; and niece, Dorothy Anne Renegar. She was a graduate of Mitchell College in Statesville and Nashville General Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee and later served on the Public Health Staff of Cleveland County North Carolina. She retired as Director of Public Health Nursing for Haywood County after 37 years. Rubye was a member of First United Methodist Church of Waynesville and was a former member of the Board of Trustees of Haywood Community College, the Advisory Council of the Salvation Army, the Haywood County Business and Professional Women's Club, and also a member of the Board of Directors for WNC Tomorrow. She also served as Haywood County Commissioner from 1976–1988. Rubye is survived by a niece, Betty Griffith of California; great nieces, Betsy Kalusa and her husband, Kim, and Gail Pyle and her husband, Jim; and great nephew, John Griffith. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, February 16, 2015 at First United Methodist Church with Reverend Dr. George Thompson officiating. Entombment will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park Mausoleum. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church Endowment Fund, P.O. Box 838, Waynesville, NC 28786.
