Rubye Smith

April 11, 1920 — August 22, 2003

Clyde-Rubye Fish Smith- age 83 died Friday, August 22, 2003 at Haywood Regional Medical Center.

She was a native of Macon County and had lived most of her life in Haywood County. She was a daughter of the late Dewey and Julia Wood Fish. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Alden H. Smathers, who died in 1943 and her second husband, Arthur H. Smith, who died in 1978. She was also preceded in death by four sisters; Alice Parham Rhodarmer, Christine Cagle, Shirley Ratcliffe and Mary Jo Conger and two brothers; Richard T. Fish and James Paul Fish. She was employed as a nurse with Haywood Regional Medical Center for several years and later retired from American Enka after 16 years of service. She was an active member of Oak Hill United Methodist Church in Candler where she was involved in the United Methodist Women. She was also a member of the VFW Auxiliary and an honorary Kentucky Colonel.

She is survived by two daughters: Betty Smathers Amburgey and her husband Jesse of Mallie, Ky.; and Johnnie Smathers Bailey and her husband Ray of Candler; one son Dean Thomas Smathers and his wife Helena of Bethel; three sisters: Faye Scott and Catherine Worley both of Canton and Dorothy Helen Capps of Arcadia, CA.; one brother Hugh Fish of Canton; eight grandchildren: Greg and Jeff Amburgey, LeAngela A. Dennis, Derrick Robinson, Dana Messer, Scott Bailey, Jesse Smathers and Amy S. Wyatt; 16 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be Sunday, August 24, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Kim Higgins and the Reverend Jack Scott officiating. Burial will follow at Crawford/Ray Mausoleum. The family will receive friends Saturday from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at Rubye's home. Grandsons and Great-grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
