Rufus Chastain

Rufus Clayton Chastain, better known as "R. C.", age 89, passed away on Wednesday, August 7, 2013 at the John F. Keever, Jr. Solace Center in Asheville after a brief illness. He passed peacefully with his family by his bedside. He was born on January 25, 1924 in the Caney Fork Community of Jackson County and was the son of the late Rufus and Dolly Deitz Chastain. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Neal Chastain and a grandson, Bryce Gragg. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Lena Burnette Chastain of the home, a daughter, Alice Gragg and her husband, Larry, of Canton; a son, Johnny Chastain and his wife, Joyce, of Waynesville; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a sister Carrie Woody of Clyde. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, August 11, 2013 in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Johnny Chastain, Reverend Michael Chastain, Reverend Dale Wheeler officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 3:30 p.m. prior to the service.
