Rufus Mease

Rufus Guy Mease, age 75, passed away on Sunday, April 10, 2011, at Silver Bluff Rehab Center. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Rufus "Brad" and Mary Murray Mease of the Henson Cove community in Canton, NC. He was also preceded in death by an infant brother, Lester Mease and a brother, Chester Mease. Guy was a graduate of Bethel High School and married his high school sweetheart and classmate, Sarah Reece. They have shared 56 years of wonderful memories centered around their family. He retired from Champion International in 1996 after 41 years of employment. He also carried on his family's long time tradition of farming, raising various crops and cattle. Guy was a lifetime member of Spring Hill Baptist Church and served as Chair of the Building & Grounds Committee. He is survived by his wife, Sarah R. Mease; three daughters and their families; Karen Mease Grogan and her husband, Rick Grogan, and sons, Luke and Levi Grogan; Donna Sollazzo Jones and her husband, Bill Jones, and two daughters, Tonya & Teisha Putnam, and Kim Singleton and her husband, David Singleton, and daughter, Sydney Singleton. During his illness, Guy was cared for by many special caregivers on the Oncology Unit at Mission Hospital, CarePartners Home Health, Silver Bluff Rehabilitation and physician providers, Dr. Michael Messino, Dr. Paul Ahearne, and Dr. Mark Lenderman. The family is very grateful for his excellent care and support. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 12, 2011, at Spring Hill Baptist Church with the Reverend Wayne Willett officiating. Burial will follow at Spring Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Monday at Wells Funeral Home of Canton. At other times, the family will be receiving friends at the home of Karen and Rick Grogan, 30 Creekside Lane in Canton. Flowers are appreciated or memorials may be made to one's favorite charity.
