Rufus Melton

December 2, 1917 — August 26, 2009

Waynesville, Rufus Wilson Melton, age 91, passed away on Wednesday, August 26, 2009 at the Brian Center. He was born in Haywood County where he lived most of his life and was the son of the late Samuel H. and Jessie Jenkins Melton. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Geneva Eavenson Melton, who died in 2006; one brother, Herschel Melton; two sisters, Ruby McElroy and Evelyn Stamey; and a granddaughter, Mary Lynn Stark. Rufus was a millwright by profession but was also involved in several entrepreneurships. He will be cherished in memory by his family and friends. He is survived by four daughters, Wanda Mann, of Canton, Linda Sue Garris of Ft. Mill, SC, Jeannette Hill, of Durham, NC, and Carol Perkins of Somerset, NJ; one sister, Mary Silvey, of San Diego, CA; three grandchildren, Ryan King of Asheville, Linda Collins Wood of Ft. Mill, SC and Lisa Ann Collins, of Lancaster, SC; and three great grandchildren, Ashley Nicole Wood, Christopher Thomas Wood, and Ian Jamison King. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 1, 2009 in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Tim Drum officiating. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. Serving as pallbearers will be Tom Mann, Marty Perkins, Ryan King, Ian King, Tommy Wood, and Dennis Taylor. The family will receive friends from 12:45 to 1:45 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.
