Waynesville, Rufus Abraham Norman, 67, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Wednesday, June 15, 2016. A native of Jackson County, he had lived most of his life in Waynesville. He was the son of the late Wilburn and Louise Bumgarner Norman of Sylva. He proudly served his country in the US Army during the Vietnam Era. Rufus was employed at Dayco, Inc. for 26 years and later retired from the NC Department of Transportation's IMAP (Incident Management Assistance Patrols) Division. He was a volunteer at Haywood Christian Ministries and loved gospel music. He was also an avid collector of bluegrass music as well. Rufus is survived by a daughter, Kara Woods (Steve); grandsons, Seth and Logan Hardin; sisters, Janie Kirkland and Gloria Kirkendall (Jim); brothers, Lem Norman (Sue) and Henford "Tater" Norman (Mildred); and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 21, 2016 in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Craig Tucker and Reverend Tim Howard officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Memorials may be made to the NC Department of Transportation IMAP Division, 619 Paragon Parkway, Clyde, NC 28721 or Haywood Christian Ministries, 150 Branner Avenue, Waynesville, NC 28786.
