Rufus Setser

April 13, 1930 — November 10, 2006

Waynesville-Rufus L. Setser, age 76, of 158 Shelton Street, died on Friday, November 10, 2006 at Haywood Regional Medical Center. A native of Macon County, he was the son of the late William Lawrence and Pearl Gibson Setser. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant son, Douglas R. Setser; a grandson, Chad Setser; four brothers; and two sisters. He was retired from US Navy, serving from 1948 to 1968 and served during the Korean Conflict and the Bay of Pigs. Following his military career, he was employed at the Dayco Corporation for 18 years. Rufus was very active with Folkmoot USA as a volunteer for 17 years. He felt he was a vital link to all the performing groups who were in America for the first time. He made sure the beds were set up well in advance and familiarized himself with all phases of caring for crowds of people. He was proud to be a part of such a dedicated unselfish and caring group. He felt this was volunteering at its highest level and he thoroughly enjoyed it. He was a recipient of the Folkmoot USA Allen Brown Award in July 2003 for his volunteer service. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Jean Blaine Setser; one daughter, Joanie Setser of Waynesville; two sons, Charles L. Setser of Waynesville and Ed Setser and his wife, Susan, of Huntington, WV; five grandchildren, Chris, Emily, Caitlin, and Zoe Setser, and Matthew Miller; and two great grandchildren, Colby and Canyen Setser. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 90 Stiles Road, Canton, NC 28716 or the Smoky Mountain Aquatic Club, c/o Bob Gecan, 125 Kentucky Avenue, Waynesville, NC 28786. A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 12, 2006 in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville with Reverend Wade Childers officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
