Waynesville-Ruth Noland Burgin, age 98, of 37 Branner Avenue, died Friday, April 4, 2003 at Haywood Regional Medical Center.
She was a native of Fines Creek and was the daughter of the late Robert L. and Addie DeHart Noland. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Otis Owen Burgin, who died in 1989.
She was a retired teacher and merchant. She taught at Fines Creek, Allens Creek, Maggie Valley and Saunook schools. She was the oldest member of Unaka Daughters of the American Colonist of Asheville, member and past chapter officer of Dorcas Bell Love Chapter of DAR of Waynesville, member of Ruth Davidson Chapter of DAR of Asheville, member of the Historical Society, she was past worthy matron of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 165 of Waynesville, and member of the First United Methodist Church of Waynesville.
She is survived by two daughters, Carolyn B. Clayton, of Waynesville and Mary Otis B. Ostrom and her husband Dr. Gregory L. of Barrington Hills, Illinois; one brother, Thomas B. Noland of Martinsville, VA; a grandson, James B. Clayton; a granddaughter, Jessica Ostrom and a great grandson, James P. Clayton; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 8, 2003 at the First United Methodist Church of Waynesville. The Reverend W. Lyn Sorrells and Reverend John H. Christy, Jr. will officiate. Burial will be at Green Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m. Monday, April 7, 2003 at Wells Funeral Home in Waynesville.
The pallbearers will be James B. Clayton, James P. Clayton, Lynn Noland, Richard McElvaine, Blaine Hawkins and David Noland.
