Ruth Hartshorn Cabe, age 94, passed away on Saturday, June 16, 2012, at Givens Health Center at Givens Estates. Ruth, widow of Harry W. "Red" Cabe, was born in Baltimore Maryland, December 10, 1917, the first child of the late Frank O. and Ruth Davis Hartshorn. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, William D. Hartshorn. She lived in Buncombe and Haywood Counties most of her life. She worked in the cost accounting department of American Enka-Akzona Corporation for 41 years. As a teenager, during the depression, she worked variously as a guide at Biltmore Homespun Industries, a clerk at Newberry's Department Store, a stint at Biltmore-Sayles Manufacturing, and on the production line at Enka. She was an honor graduate of Sand Hill High School and attended Cecil's Business College. She had been a member of Acton Methodist Church while living in Buncombe and became a member of Central United Methodist Church in Canton. Ruth was the Worthy Matron of the Canton Chapter of Eastern Star. She was very active in her husband's Lion's Club activities, especially keeping the children in her home who were to go to Camp Hope for the program for the blind; active in civic and community projects and many church functions. She is survived by her sister, Dr. Helen Hartshorn of Asheville; nephew, William D. Hartshorn of Concord; two nieces, Ruth H. Anderson of Texas, and Shirley F. Hartshorn of Fletcher; grandnephew, William F. Hartshorn and wife, Ashley of Hendersonville; three great-grandnieces and nephews, Hailey, Aidan, and Alex of Hendersonville; grandniece, Bethany Hartshorn Peck and her husband, Adam of Concord; and two great grandnephews, Edwin Anderson and his wife, Megan and their son, William Kenneth Anderson and Davis Anderson, all of Wasilla, Alaska. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 19, 2012, at Canton Central United Methodist Church with the Reverend David H. Christy officiating. Burial will follow at Bon-A-Venture Cemetery on Old Clyde Road. The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 3:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church. Wells Funeral Home of Canton is in charge of the arrangements. The family wishes to express grateful thanks to Ruth's special friends, Lib Murphy of Waynesville, Troy Rhinehart of Canton, and the very caring staff of Smoky Mountain Health and Rehabilitation Center of Waynesville and Givens Health Center of Givens Estates.
