Ruth Swanger

February 3, 1917 — November 16, 2004

Waynesville-Ruth Cowan Swanger, age 87 of Camp Branch Road, died Tuesday, November 16, 2004 at her residence. She was a native of Jackson County and the daughter of the late Harrison and Eva Gribble Cowan. She was the wife of the late Alonzo C. Swanger and was also preceded in death by two sisters, Ethel Muse and Lola Rickman and one brother, Junior Cowan, one granddaughter, Jeannie Griffin Brown. Mrs. Swanger retired from Wellco Industries in 1982 and was a member of Allens Creek Baptist Church. She was a former employee of Champion Papers. She is survived by two daughters, Audrey Trantham of Canton and Mary Lou Hanke of British Columbia, Canada, one son Gerald Swanger of Waynesville, three sisters Bertie Muse of Waynesville, Eva Eckels of Venice, FL and Mary Rose Hartswell of Hampton, VA, one brother William Cowan of Asheville, 5 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, November 19, 2004 at Bon-A-Venture Cemetery on Old Clyde Road. Mr. Jim Griffin will officiate. The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon until 1:30 p.m. at Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services of Canton prior to the graveside service. Memorials may be made to Central Haywood High School Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 249, Clyde, NC 28721.
