Ruth Ferguson Stockton, formerly of Earley Street, died Saturday, April 9, 2005 at Laurels of Summit Ridge. She was a native of Whittier and a resident of Haywood County since 1936. She was the daughter of the late Paul and Mae Ferguson of Bryson City. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ellis E. Stockton, who died in 1982 and two sisters, Gertrude Ferguson and Belle Snyder. She had attended the old Asheville Normal College, where she attained a teacher's certificate. She taught primary grades in Swain and Jackson counties for a number of years, then attended a beauticians' school in Charlotte, after which she worked at Sheffield's Beauty Shop in Canton. She did occasional substitute teaching in Canton City Schools and Haywood County Schools in the fifties and sixties. She was active at Rockwood United Methodist Church as long as health permitted, being a fixture in the United Methodist Women and as a Sunday School teacher and member of the youth outreach movement. She is survived by two sons, Charles Stockton and wife Nadena of Canton and Ronald Stockton and wife Barbara of Candler; three brothers, John Ferguson of Whittier, Robert Ferguson and wife Virginia of Randelman and Hubert Ferguson and wife Juanita of Bryson City and several nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 12, 2005 at Green Hill Cemetery with the Reverend Steve Miller officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:30 - 1:30 p.m. prior to the services at Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services of Canton. Memorials may be made to Meals on Wheels, 486 E.
