Ruth Putnam Trantham, age 96, passed peacefully from this life at her residence on Monday, July 6, 2009. A native of Mitchell County, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Susie Mace Putnam. She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Artis James Trantham, who died in 1996; four sisters; a brother; and two grandchildren, Bryan Edwards and Austin Littlejohn. She was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church. Ruth was a gifted artist in many mediums including, oil, ceramics, and needlework. She and her husband, Art, owned and managed successful farms in Haywood County and Pickens County in upstate SC. She is survived by a son, Jim Trantham and his wife, Carolyn, of Canton; two daughters, Jean Littlejohn and her husband, David, of Clyde; and Sue Bridges and her husband, Russell, of Canton; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and dear friends and caregivers: Betty Jo Ruff, Jan Coriarity, and Nancy King. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 8, 2009, at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Steve Miller and the Reverend Bruce Cayton officiating. Burial will follow at Crawford/Ray Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 1:45 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at Ruth's residence. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Good Samaritan Clinic of Haywood County, 112 Academy Street, Canton, NC 28716.
