Waynesville, Ruth Louise Corwin Whitman, age 78, of 118 Pitts Street, passed away on Wednesday, September 12, 2012 at Mission Hospital. A native of Grantsville, West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Owen Raymond and Helen Doane Corwin. Ruth had three priorities in her life: faith, family, and bridge. She was a selfless and nurturing woman always putting others before herself. Ruth was heavily involved with Operation Christmas Child, Hospice, and The Open Door. She also enjoyed knitting afghans and quilting for her friends and family. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, James N. Whitman; one daughter, Tawnya Lynne Gray, and her husband, Mike, of Roanoke Rapids; two sons, James Richard Whitman and his wife, Marion, of Shawnee, Kansas and Charles Brian Whitman and his wife, Nancy, of Arden; two brothers, Donald Corwin and his wife, Ann, of Cary and Doyle Corwin and his wife, Joyce, of Forest City; and seven grandchildren, Christine Gray, Patrick and Carleigh Whitman, Victoria and Ian Davis, and Celeste and Eve Whitman. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 15, 2012 at First Presbyterian Church of Waynesville of which she was an active member. Reverend John Lindsay and Reverend Patrick Womack will officiate. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 9:30 until 11:00 a.m. prior to services at the church. Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Waynesville, 305 N.
