Sally Ray

Waynesville-Sally Taylor Ray, age 102, died on May 28, 2007 at Autumn Care Nursing Home. A native of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late John and Mary Alice Taylor. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Edwin Ray, Jr., who died in 1987 and a brother Jimmy Taylor. She received her degree at St. Mary's and was the Assistant to the Dean of UNC Chapel Hill. Sally and her husband, Charles, owned Ray's Grocery and Dry Goods and formerly owned the Shelton House before deeding it for use as a museum. She was a 16-year volunteer for the American Red Cross, a pink lady at Haywood County Hospital, and an avid fan of the Carolina Tar Heel Football Team. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Waynesville. She is survived by one niece, Sarah Taylor, several cousins, and her special caregivers, Gladys, Allene, Pam, Angie, and Lois. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 31, 2007 at Green Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 9:30 until 10:30 a.m. on Thursday prior to services at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville.
