Waynesville, Samuel "Sam" Medford Burgess, Jr., age 73, of Handsome Drive, passed away on Monday, June 4, 2012 at MedWest-Haywood. A native of Haywood County, he was the son of Laura Messer Burgess and the late Samuel Medford Burgess. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a brother, James Hugh Burgess and a infant brother, Horace Eugene Burgess. Sam retired from the Power Plant at American Enka (BASF) and was a United States Army veteran. He was a member of Liberty Baptist Church and attended Dellwood Baptist Church. Sam was a musician and was known and loved by many. In addition to his mother, he is survived by a sister; Mary Lou Hannah of Waynesville; two children; four grandchildren; a nephew and four nieces. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 7, 2012 at Dellwood Baptist Church with Reverend Jerry Nelson, Reverend Barry Willett, Reverend Bobby Rogers and Revered Chad Ellege officiating. Burial will follow at Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be David Hugh and J.C. Burgess, Dallas Greene, Richard Messer, Danny Kirkpatrick and Neal McElroy. Honorary pallbearers will be Doc Burgess, French Kirkpatrick, J.T. Ball and the Dellwood Senior Men's Sunday school class. The family will receive friends from 12:00 Noon until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church. Memorials may be made to Jonathan Creek Fire and Rescue, 87 Joe Carver Road, Waynesville, NC 28785.
