Waynesville-Samuel "Sam" L. Calhoun, 79, of 41 Blackberry Ridge, passed away on Saturday, March 4, 2006 at his home. A native of Haywood County, son of the late Joseph and Callie Calhoun, he was preceded in death by five sisters, Minnie, Ruth, Mary, Kate, Dorothy; two brothers, Paul, Joe and one daughter, Lauren. A devoted husband and loving father, he was a member of Grace Episcopal Church in the Mountains, where he was a member of the vestry and served two terms as junior warden. After graduating from Waynesville Township High School, he joined the U.S. Army at age 17 and served in World War II in Europe. After his discharge, he attended NC State University and was a member of two honorary engineering fraternities, and graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering with regular Army commission of second Lieutenant. He was employed by Champion Paper for 38 years. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Katherine Calhoun, two daughters, Lanier Colgan, and her husband, Tim, of Longwood, FL; Lisa Calhoun, of Waynesville; two sons, Keith Calhoun, and his wife, Regina, of Greensboro, NC; John Calhoun, and his wife, Cyndi, of Banner Elk, NC; two sisters, Myrtle Smalley, Billie Turner; and one brother, Don Calhoun, all of Waynesville. He also had three grandchildren, Cal, Mark and Katherine Colgan of Longwood, FL. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 7, 2006 at Grace Episcopal Church in the Mountains with Reverend Dr. Howard W. White, Jr. officiating. The family will receive family and friends at the church parish hall following the burial at Green Hill cemetery.
