Waynesville-Samuel Arthur ''Dan'' Dantzler, age 88, of Little Mountain Road, died Saturday, March 13, 2004 at Autumn Care Nursing Home, after an extended illness.
He was born on February 21, 1916 in Orangeburg, SC. He was the son of the late Samuel and Sallie R. Dantzler.
He was a graduate of the Medical University of South Carolina College of Pharmacy in Charleston, SC. Dan was a combat veteran of WWII, serving in the Pacific as a Navy corpsman with the First Marine Division. He was a member of the American Legion Post 47. In 1952 Dan and his wife opened Dan's Drug Store, on Main Street in Waynesville, which they owned and operated until 1960. He was a member of Hazelwood Presbyterian Church. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Mary Claire Dantzler, Emilie Dantzler Smith, and Rodgers Dantzler Barrett.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Emma Prince Dantzler; one daughter, Anita D. Powell of Asheville, NC; two grandchildren, Mitchell Powell and his wife, Jamie of Waynesville, and Lesley Powell of Greensboro, NC; and three great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 16, 2004 at the Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel. The Reverend Larry Wilson will officiate. Entombment will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park Mausoleum. The family will receive friends following the services, at the mausoleum chapel.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hazelwood Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 67, Hazelwood, NC 28738, or to one's favorite charity.
