Samuel Holland

October 3, 1934 — November 9, 2011

Samuel Luther "Sam" Holland, age 77, of Bryson Road died on Wednesday, November 9, 2011, at the Charles George VA Medical Center in Asheville. A native of Macon County, he was the son of the late Lem and Bertha Crawford Holland. He was also preceded in death by his stepmother, Hester Conley Holland. He was a United States Air Force Veteran serving four years in Greenland. He retired from American Enka in 1983 with 22 years of service. He was a member of VFW Post #9939 and The Disabled American Veterans. One of his life loves was Southern gospel music and he sang in several quartets as wells as with his daughters. Mr. Holland was a member of Pole Creek Baptist Church where he served as Training Union Director and a choir member. Mr. Holland was a 12-year resident of Charles George VA Medical Center's Community Living Center, 1st floor. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Kate Buchanan Holland; two daughters, Terra Thompson and her husband, Dean, and Connie Weeks and her husband, Drew, all of Candler; four grandchildren, Whitney and Will Thompson and Zachary and Kyle Weeks; a half brother, Mark Holland and his wife, Pam, and a nephew, Jacob Holland, all of Summerville, SC. The family wishes to extend special thanks to the Community Living Center, 1st Floor staff of the Charles George VA Medical Center, Rhonda Hensley and Dr. Eva Morganstern. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 12, 2011, at Pole Creek Baptist Church with the Reverend Dennis Thurman, Reverend Dr. Johnnie Tiller, and Reverend Richard Baird officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Enka. The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church. Pallbearers will be Will Thompson, Zachary and Kyle Weeks, Calvin Buchanan, Gene Williamson, and Kelly Pittman. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Men's Sunday School Class of the church, Thurman McFee, Albert Morgan, and Frank Robinson. Memorials may be made to Charles George VA Medical Center, Community Living Center, 1st Floor, in memory of Sam Holland, 1100 Tunnel Road, Asheville, NC 28805.
