Waynesville-Samuel Marcus Setzer, age 76, died on Wednesday, October 4, 2006 at the Brian Center. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Jacob Verlin and Ida Mae Knight Setzer. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Glenn, Dillard, and Willard Setzer; and one sister, Wilda Rathbone. He was a US Army veteran of the Korean Conflict and a member of the Disabled Veterans Association. Samuel was employed by Enka for 15 years and was a member of Maggie United Methodist Church. He was a professional musician, member of several bands and played many instruments including the mandolin, fiddle, guitar, and banjo. He is survived by his wife Lucy Rathbone Setzer; three stepdaughters, Kay Westfall, of Columbia, SC, Jackie Barrineau of Myrtle Beach, SC, and Teresa McKellar of Mt. Pleasant, SC; one stepson, Larry Jackson of Jamestown, SC; one sister, Mary Susie Short Francis and her husband, Edward, of Waynesville; one brother, Raymond Setzer and his wife, Margaret, of Waynesville; 13 step grandchildren; 2 step great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 7, 2006 in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Jeremy Troxler and Reverend Jerry Nelson officiating. Burial will follow at Henry Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, October 6, 2006 at Wells Funeral Home, and other times, at the home of the family. Serving as pallbearers will be Albert, James, Sidney, Kevin "Scooter," Larry, and Jake Rathbone. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Maggie United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 112, Maggie Valley, NC 28751.
