Waynesville, Sarah Welch Murray, age 91, passed away on Tuesday, May 4, 2010 at Autumn Care Nursing Home. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late Julius C. Welch (former sheriff of Haywood County) and Fannie Boyd Welch. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by three brothers, Robert V. Welch, Dr. Julius C. Welch and Joseph Howell Welch and one sister, Marietta "Babe" W. Felmet. She was a 1936 graduate of Waynesville Township High School and a 1940 graduate of Western Carolina University where she was elected "Best All Around Student" of her senior class. She was employed by the Haywood County School System, retiring in 1981 after a 29-year teaching career. She and her husband were co-owners of the Waynesville Motor Court. Sara was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution as well as former member of the board of directors of Folkmoot. She was also a former director of the Women's division of the Civil Defense Corp and past president of the Women's Democratic Club. Sara was fondly known by both family and close friends as "Aunt Tut" or "Snooks." She is survived by her husband of 64½ years, James E. Murray and many loved nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 8, 2010 in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Sanford W. Giles and Reverend Kathleen M. Wilson officiating. Interment will follow at Green Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 9:45 until 11:00 a.m. prior to the services at the funeral home.
