LAKE JUNALUSKA, NC - Sarah Murphy Workman, 82, died at her home in Lake Junaluska on July 19, 2008 from the complications of pancreatic cancer. She was a resident of Lake Junaluska for 35 years. Originally from Knoxville, Tennessee, she was the daughter of R. M. Murphy Sr. and Perle P. Murphy. She earned a degree from University of TN and a Masters of Management from Vanderbilt University that helped with her lifelong commitment to volunteering and continuing education. Sarah worked many years for the Girl Scouts of America locally and nationally, as well as internationally with the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts where her contributions were recognized in 1987 as a recipient of the Juliette Low World Friendship Medal. Sarah worked with various volunteer and professional groups as a management consultant including the Intentional Growth Center at Lake Junaluska. Sarah enjoyed traveling around the world, and meeting new people and experiencing their cultures but coming home to Lake Junaluska was always the best destination for her. Family and friends will dearly miss her wit, intelligence, and spirit. Her three children survive her, Richard H. Workman, Jr. of Winston-Salem, NC, Mary F. Workman of Knoxville, TN, Sarah W. Workman of Athens, GA and three grandchildren, Michael Muto, Emily R. Workman and Sarah E. Workman. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her name to the World Foundation for Girl Guides and Girl Scouts, Inc., P. O. Box 23093, Newark, NJ 07189, online at wagggsworld.org - or Haywood Regional Medical Center Hospice, 560 Leroy George Drive, Clyde, NC 28721. A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, August 1, 2008 at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville, NC. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the funeral home.
