Candler - Shelton "Pappy" King, 85, died Friday, February 21, 2003 at the Heritage Health Care Center in Hendersonville following a brief illness.
He was a native of Buncombe County and also lived in Haywood County for several years. He was the son of the late Mack and Mantie Jones King. He was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline Muse King who died in 1997; a daughter, Margaret Pauline King; four sisters, Roxie Smith, Sue Addie King, Lassie King and Elzie Clark; two brothers Fate and Hershal "Hut" King.
He retired from Beacon Manufacturing and attended The Dwelling Place Church in Candler. He was a United States Army veteran serving during World War II and was a recipient of the Bronze Star.
He is survived by a daughter, Blanche Marie Jackson of Belton, SC; five grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild as well as several nieces and nephews and a very special great-great-great nephew, Joshua Tyler Cummings.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 25, 2003 at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Pastors Gwen and Wade Hall officiating. Burial will follow at Jones Valley Baptist Church Cemetery in Sandy Mush. The family will receive friends from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the residence of his great niece, Jolanda Israel, 142 Bradshaw Circle, Candler.
