Canton – Sherman Walker Surrett, Jr., age 69, passed away on Wednesday, March 9, 2016 at Mission Hospitals – Memorial Campus. A native of Buncombe County, he was the son of the late Sherman Walker Surrett, Sr. and Ruth Helen "Granny Dode" Greene Surrett. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Joyce Surrett and Tom Surrett and sister, Shirley Fisher. He retired from Norfolk Southern Railway and was a United States Navy veteran serving in Vietnam. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church. In Sherman's life, music played a central role, second only to his church and family. Sherman loved singing as a member of Coffee Branch Band as well as telling and sharing of Appalachian Mountain stories with those around him. Other life interests included coon hunting, teaching dance and politics…not necessarily in that order. In this season of election, Sherman would remind everyone to exercise their privilege to vote. He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Margaret Rhea Surrett of Canton; a daughter, Amy Mullins of Northville, Michigan; two sons, Thad Surrett and his wife, Ronda, of Candler and Kile Davis and his wife, Wendy, of Weaverville; and ten grandchildren, Hunter Surrett, Chloe and Katie Trexler, Logan and Tessa Johnson, Alex and Dawson Davis, and Zachary, Meredith and Rachel Andrews. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 12, 2016 at Bethel Baptist Church with the Reverend Dr. Roy Kilby and Reverend Tommy Crowe officiating. Burial will follow at Ridgeway Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 3:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church. Wells Funeral Home of Canton is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Ridgeway Baptist Church Maintenance Fund, 525 Old US 19/32 Highway, Candler, NC 28715.
