SHERRY M. YOUNG
Waynesville-Sherry McDowell Young, died Tuesday, January 21, 2003.
A native of Mercer County, Pennsylvania, she was born March 6, 1912 to Fred W. and Mildred P. McDowell. The McDowell family was internationally known as breeders of Hampshire sheep, and Sherry was the fifth generation to raise and show prizewinning sheep. Sherry was a 1933 honors graduate of Grove City College, Grove City, Pennsylvania where she majored in English and Business Administration. She taught English at Fredonia High School, became a legal assistant, and then a court reporter for the Mercer County Court system. In 1962, she moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida and operated a court reporting service until she retired in 1985 and moved to Waynesville. She was a past president of the Waynesville Garden Club, and an active supporter of the arts and the environment.
Sherry was adventurous, traveling to China the first year it was open. She visited much of the world with many companions. She brought back a love of international cuisine and was well known for her culinary skills and her hospitality.
She is survived by her daughter, Sherry Ann Young, of Knoxville, Tennessee, and a family of many dear friends in Waynesville, across the country, and throughout the world. The family thanks the staff at Autumn Care for their many loving kindnesses and skill.
A celebration of her life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 1, 2003 in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Mark Knisley of Graystone Presbyterian Church of Knoxville officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the funeral home. A private interment service will be held at a later date.
