Shirley Finger

Waynesville, Shirley Elizabeth Clampitt Finger, age 72, ran into the arms of Jesus on Sunday, October 11, 2020.

She was born on February 22, 1948 in Franklin, North Carolina, she was a daughter of the late Robert Clampitt and Flora Mashburn Chambers.  In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her stepfather, Marshal Chambers; three brothers, Delmas "Nick", Bob and Bill Clampitt.

Shirley married Wayne Finger in 1964 and had one daughter, Kristal Finger Cherry (Ray Shepard).  Her greatest treasures in this life were her family especially her two granddaughters, Keely and Karsen Cherry.  Shirley was a mother to many. She operated Luv n Stuff daycare for 44 years.  Shirley was the director of Dixie Darlinʹ Cloggers for 44 years and was inducted into America’s Clogging Hall of Fame in 1997 and was the recipient of the 2009 Mountain Dance and Folk Festival’s Sam Queen award.  Shirley will be loved and missed by so many.

Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 15, 2020 in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Jerry Nelson and Reverend Ray Shepard officiating.  Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park.  Serving as pallbearers will be Ed Holcombe, Marion Ferguson, Paul Cagle, Keith Wright, Jeff Franklin and Linda Bradshaw.  Honorary pallbearers will be all past and present members of the Dixie Darlinʹ Cloggers.  The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 14, 2020 at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville. At other times the family will be at the residence, 72 South Hill Street, Waynesville.

Her family would like to thank all the staff at Haywood Regional Hospital, Margaret Woody and Vondi Cunningham for their care of Shirley.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

The care of Shirley has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Homes.
