Waynesville, Shirley Ann Simoson, age 74, passed away Thursday, December 20, 2012 at MedWest-Haywood. She was a native of Schenectady, NY and had lived in Downers Grove, IL, Sturgis, MI, Des Moines, IA, Schenectady, NY and was currently residing in Waynesville, NC. She was the daughter of the late Francis and Madeline Tomasi Sheehan and was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. She was a graduate of St. Joseph's Academy in Schenectady, NY. Shirley was a woman of compassion and drive. While living in Illinois, she served as a volunteer at Maryville Academy. Here, she would rock and care for acutely-ill babies while providing them with the unconditional love they so desperately deserved. In Michigan, Shirley served as President of the Junior Woman's League, as well as being active in several other community activities. She was an avid reader and loved traveling around the world. But her most important treasure, next to her faith was her beautiful family. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Carl Simoson, three daughters, Ann Simmons and her husband Chuck and Ruth Ann Simoson, all of Waynesville, NC; Catherine Siers and her husband Michael of Chandler, AZ; three sons, Michael Simoson and his wife Jane of Cedar Rapids, IA, Joseph Simoson and life partner Ali Keyes of Minneapolis, MN, Christopher Simoson and life partner Thomas Knutson of Naples, FL; one sister, Geraldine Roth of Rotterdam, NY, one brother, John Sheehan and his wife Dottie of Phoenix, AZ; 12 grandchildren; Caroline Roten, Megan and Emily Simmons, Jessica and Joseph Dawson, Austin and Taylor Carlisle, Justin and Andrew Simoson, Gabriel Simoson, Madeline and Helen Siers; 4 great-grandchildren; Jackson, Avery, Sadie Grace Roten, Ayzlinn Dawson and several nieces and nephews. The memorial mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, December 28, 2012 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Father Lawrence LoMonaco will officiate. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. at the fellowship hall prior to the service.
