Shirley Smith

Waynesville, Shirley Arrowood Smith, age 75, of Boulder Drive, passed away on Wednesday, January 09, 2013 at Autumn Care Nursing Home. A native of Burnsville, she was the daughter of the late Elzie R. and Gladys Honeycutt Arrowood. She worked as a self-employed realtor. She deeply loved her family and was especially known for her culinary expertise and her resourcefulness. Shirley was known for her craftsmanship, creating beautiful decoupage, home furnishing and clothing. She was kind, compassionate, and always placed others' needs before her own. As an active member of Hazelwood Presbyterian Church, she served as a Sunday-School teacher, Vacation Bible School Director, Youth Group leader and a leader of Women of the Church. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Samuel S. Smith; two daughters, Debbie Crouse (Daryl) of Candler and Laurie Smith of Waynesville; one son, Jonathan Smith (René) of Westlake Village, California; three sisters, Claudine Staffon of Jonesboro, Georgia, Earline Engle (Bill) of Asheville, Patricia Burrell of Canton; four grandchildren, Alex Smith of Waynesville, Wesley Crouse of Durham, Erin Crouse (Jason) of Chapel Hill, and Patrick LaMartina of Westlake Village, California; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 12, 2013 at Hazelwood Presbyterian Church with Reverend Larry W. Wilson and Reverend Patrick Womack officiating. Burial will follow at Green Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30 until 3:00 p.m. prior to services at the church.
