Shirley Sutton

Shirley Ann Smith Sutton, age 74, passed away on Friday November 29, 2013 at MedWest – Haywood. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late Lonnie and Vernie Lee Blaylock Smith. She was also preceded in death by a son, Richard Smith and a sister, Maxine Sorrells. She retired from American Enka/BASF as a supervisor with 35 years of service and was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Shirley loved basketball and was an avid UNC Tar Heels fan. She played basketball for Bethel High School and was selected to play on the 1958 All State team. Shirley will be remembered for loving and caring for everyone she met. She always put others before herself and would help anyone in need. Shirley adored her family, especially her grandchildren who were the light of her life. She is survived by her husband of forty years, Leonard Sutton; two daughters, Danette Ledford and her husband, Zeke, of Waynesville and Sue Ann Owings and her husband, Steve, of Clyde; a son, Danny Smith and his wife, Kelly, of Canton; two sisters, Mary Ellen Pressley and her husband, Carroll, of Canton and June Sorrells and her husband, J.C., of Clyde; a brother, Robert Smith and Jan Wright of Candler; five grandchildren; Josie Owings, Casey Nash, Macy Ledford, and Corey and Nathan Ledford; a great-grandson, Austin Williams; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, December 2, 2013 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church with the Reverend Dr. Perry Brindley and Reverend Dr. Jack Holland officiating. Burial will follow at Bethel Community Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:45 p.m. prior to the service at the church. At other times the family will receive friends at the residence of Danette Ledford, 187 David Edwards Road, Waynesville.
