"1932-2016" Clyde – SMSgt (Ret) Benny Young, age 84, passed away on Wednesday , October 5, 2016 at CarePartners Solace Center in Asheville. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was the son of Lyda Columbus and Mamie Elizabeth Smith Young. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers and four sisters. Benny's early life began in the Thickety community of Haywood County. After graduating from Canton High School in 1951 Benny enlisted in the United States Air Force where he served his country proudly for 24 years having served during the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam Era. During his distinguished military career, he was awarded the Bronze Star and two Commendation Medals. Benny's military service took him throughout Southeast Asia and the Pacific Rim. After retiring in 1975, Benny was appointed as a Magistrate in Haywood County where he continued serving his community for 16 years. He was a dedicated member of Clyde Wesleyan Church. Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 64 years, Ruth Trull Young; a daughter, Kelly Galloway and her husband, Rick, of Locust Grove, Georgia; two sons, Steve Young and his wife, Laurel, of Brevard and Larry Young and his wife, Ginger, of Canton; a sister, Polly Hall of Asheville; five grandchildren, Dustin Young and his wife, Emily, Andrew Young, Amanda Hudson and her husband, Joe, Leslie Young and Brittany Bernardini and her husband, Joe and five great-grandchildren, Brady and Finley Hudson, Cruz, Knox and Ayla Bernardini. Funeral services will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 8, 2016 in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Eddie Clayton and Reverend James Parham officiating. Burial will follow at Crawford/Ray Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
