Sophia Sutton

July 21, 1926 — December 13, 2020

Waynesville, Sophia Evelyn McCracken Sutton, age 94, passed away on Sunday, December 13, 2020 at Haywood Lodge & Retirement Center.

A native of Haywood County, Evelyn was the daughter of the late Albert J. and Myrtle Medford McCracken.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul A. Sutton; daughter in-law Jane L. Sutton; five brothers, Ernest C. McCracken (Ruth Ann), A. Carroll McCracken (Helen), William A. McCracken (Hilda), David E. McCracken (Kathy), Albert J. McCracken Jr.; brother in-law Gene Gray; and sister, Mabel M. Bryson (Carroll).

She attended Western Carolina University, worked for the World Methodist Council at Lake Junaluska and was a lifelong member of Long’s Chapel United Methodist Church.

Evelyn is survived by two sons, Gregg Sutton of Waynesville, and Mark Sutton (Robin) of Iowa; daughter, Cindy Williams (Howard) of Greensboro; five grandchildren, Nathan Sutton and Ashley Ritcher (John), LeeAllison Goryl (Christopher) and Patrick Williams, and Zachary Sutton; five great-grandchildren James, Sophia and Jack Ritcher, Justice and Tucker Sutton; two sisters, Peggy M. Briggs (Bruce) and Mary Francis M. Gray; and sister in-law, Polly McCracken.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.
