Waynesville, Spencer O. Kent, age 88, a wonderful husband, father, friend and true gentleman, passed away on Monday, May 24, 2021, at his residence.
He was born in Madison County on his grandfather’s farm to the late Quin Kent and the late Virginia Kent Thompson.
After high school, Spencer served four years in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. Upon returning home, he continued his military career in the United States Air Force Reserves, retiring as Master Sergeant, with 22 years of service. He retired as Superintendent of Pulp and Chemical Department from Champion Paper with 38 years of service. Along with continuing his military service and working at Champion, he attended Blanton’s Business College earning a degree in Business Finance. He was a Mason and member of Pigeon River Lodge #368 AF & AM for many years. In addition to his love of music, Spencer enjoyed playing golf and cherished many memories of golfing trips with his buddies. He spent latter years, playing golf weekly with his friend and golfing buddy, Jim Scarboro. He loved his home and neighbors of 10 Country Club where he served on the HOA Board for 15 years with dedication and diligence. Spencer was a man of deep Christian faith.
Spencer is survived by his wife of 45 years, Jackie Robinson Kent; one son, Greg Kent (Nancy) of Madera, California; two brothers, Oliver Kent (Judy) of Newport, Tennessee, and Glenn Kent of Canton; one sister, Shirley Childs of Atlanta, Georgia; two granddaughters, Elizabeth Kent Frazier (Brett) of Madera, California, and Rebekah Kent Roberts (Mitch) of Clovis, California; and six great-grandchildren, Wyatt Frazier, Hallie Frazier, Emma Frazier, Brooks Frazier, Hugh Roberts and Wade Roberts.
A memorial service with military honors will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 6 in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. prior to the service.
Spencer’s family would like to express their gratitude and appreciation to Dr. Richard Steele and staff, Dr. Ditte Phillips and staff, Haywood Home Health Care and Four Seasons Palliative/Hospice Care for their medical care and support. A special “Thank You” to their extended family and special friend, Revonda Guy Cunningham, for all of her love, care and support, enabling Spencer to remain in his home that he loved.
