Stanley Arnold

Waynesville, Stanley I. Arnold died on August 14, 2012, at home surrounded by his family. Stan, whose birth name was Ignacy S. Abramowicz, was born in Lodz, Poland on July 23, 1927, and was the only son of Maria and Julian Abramowicz. During World War II, he and his parents were forcibly transported from Poland to Russia, where they survived two years in a Russian re-education camp before emigrating first to Iran, and ultimately to Tel Aviv, Israel, where he completed high school. Stan then came to the United States by himself and put himself through school at the University of Washington and Harvard Business School. Stan served for two years in the United States Army, as a military intelligence officer in Germany. After successful career in corporate American, Stan and his wife, Linda, moved to Waynesville, North Carolina, in 1986, here they owned and operated Grandview Lodge until 2001. Stan was a longstanding member of the Greater Haywood County Chamber of Commerce and served as President in 1990. He also served in the Sunrise Rotary Club of Waynesville, where he held a number of positions including President. Stan volunteered for several years with the Andean Rural Health Commission and the Haywood County Tourism Development Authority. Stan was an avid bridge player, who for 26 years played regularly with the Smoky Mountain Duplicate Bridge Club in Waynesville, North Carolina. He is survived by his wife, Linda Arnold, two sons, Robert M. Arnold and James E. Arnold, their respective spouses, Nancy Levine-Arnold and Krista M. Macari, and four grandchildren, Brandon L. Arnold, Kirsten M. Arnold, Shula Levine-Schechter, and Hillel Levine-Schechter. Another son, Larry Michael Arnold, is deceased. There will be no funeral or memorial service at this time, but the family plans on conducting a memorial service at a later time. The family asks that in lieu of flowers that donations be made in Stan's name to MedWest-Haywood Hospice & Palliative Care, The Homestead, 127 Sunset Ridge Road, Clyde, NC 28721, or The Good Samaritan Clinic, 34 Sims Circle, Waynesville, NC 28786.
